Course Overview

Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment.  Put simply, civil engineers build bridges, roads, canals, dams, tall buildings and other large structures.
Civil engineering is all about creating, improving and protecting the environment in which we live.  It provides the facilities for day-to-day life and for transport and industry to go about its work.
You will cover the following – planning, design and construction of projects ranging from bridges and stadiums to flood defences, analysing and testing samples of materials, produce working drawings, calculations, costings, progress-chasing and some site work.
The HNC is a two year part time-course on day release. It is accredited and validated by Edexcel and is a popular course for construction studies leading into BSc Degree programs or professional Institute courses. 
 

Programme Content

Course modules will be studied one day a week over a two year programme including both mandatory and optional units. The Modules to be studied in each year will be based at the college's Advanced Technology Centre, Unit Waterfront Business Park, Brierley Hill, DY5 1LX

  • Unit 1 - Design Principles and Application for Construction and the Built Environment Level 4 Credits 15
  • Unit 2 - Science and Materials for Construction and the Built Environment Level 4 Credits 15
  • Unit 3 - Applied Mathematics for Construction and the Built Environment Level 4 Credits 15
  • Unit 5 - Group Project in the Construction Industry Level 5 Credits 20
  • Unit 27 - Site Surveying Procedures for Construction and the Built Environment Level 4 Credits 15
  • Unit 32 - Engineering Geology and Soil Mechanics Level 4 Credits 15
  • Unit 33 - Civil Engineering Technology Level 4 Credits 15
  • Unit 34 - Structural Analysis and Design Level 5 Credits 15

Key Facts

Entry Requirements - 5 GCSEs at grade C or above to include English, Science and Mathematics.
plus
One A Level or equivalent vocational A Level in Mathematics or a science based subject at Grade D or above.
or
Advanced GNVQ pass in a relevant discipline.
or
Edexcel Diploma/Extended Diploma or NVQ Level 3 pass in a relevant discipline.
or
Advanced Modern Apprenticeship pass in a relevant discipline.
or
Mature Applicants (21+) with relevant experience will also be considered, subject to interview and accept ion is at the discretion of the college.
 

Duration

1 day a week over a two year programme

Assessment

The course is delivered by appropriately experienced and qualified lecturers. The course material reflects your work environment together with simulated workplace tasks. You will work both individually and in groups.
A variety of traditional and innovative assessment methods, including case studies, assignments, time constrained assessments and work based projects will be used.

Progression

This is a higher technician course and is also designed for those in the industry who wish to upskill to a Degree in one of the following:
Quantity Surveying, Building Surveying, Structural/Civil Engineering, Architecture/Architectural Technology, Construction Management and Economics, Professional Institute Studies, Building Services Engineering.
We have progression links with both The University of Coventry and The University of Wolverhampton.
